Now this is more or less what I was trying to say - "One of the key rationales for separating the powers of the executive, legislature and judiciary is to prevent politicians playing god with people’s lives in the interests of political gain and their own public image, and yet it seems to me that an attempt at ‘playing god’ is exactly what is going on here." - it just took someone with more insight than myself to get the words right!
